About me

Melissa Reynolds

I didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming an editor, but I did grow up reading two to three novels a week. Inspirational and historical fiction, mostly, pulled from the shelves during weekly library trips with my mom. Somewhere between those books, the journal pages I filled, and the long letters I wrote to pen pals, I found a deep love of storytelling. I didn’t know then where it would lead, but over time, I grew into writing, editing, and helping others shape their stories, too.

I joined fanstory.com where I began my writing and editing journey. I read all of the how-to-write books and tested my own writing on fanstory. From there, I became a slush reader for Everydayfiction.com and discovered that I have a talent for giving feedback to authors in addition to my love of reading and writing. I eventually became an editor with EDF.

When I learned all I could on my own, I returned to college to get my English degree. My senior project involved an internship with The Metaworker Literary Magazine, where I continue to work as an editor. I excelled in college and was invited to apply to grad school to study Professional Writing and Editing. I earned my Masters degree in two years and worked as a Proposal Analyst. I rediscovered what I already knew to be true–my heart lies with fiction writing and editing.

Since then, I’ve worked as a NYC Midnight judge and on Upwork with freelance projects.

I’m also a writer with over 20 published stories and poems, check out my author’s section for links. I’m an active member of my local writers group, Morgantown Writers Group, where I have curated, edited, formatted, and designed their latest anthology River and Stone. (Available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.)

I understand both sides of the writing process; both as writer and editor. I have walked through the lows of rejection letters and soared with acceptance letters, and I’ve been on the other side– sending out letters of both kinds as an editor. I know how difficult it is to take the vision for a story or poem to the page, but I also know the writing conventions that can help your words sing.
